Transvaginal Mesh Recall & Lawsuit

Transvaginal mesh is a synthetic mesh implanted through the vagina as a treatment for pelvic organ prolapse (POP) and stress urinary incontinence (SUI).  Pelvic Organ Prolapse and Stress Urinary Incontinence often occur as a result of childbirth, a hysterectomy, or menopause. A 2011 study in the International Urogynecology Journal found that POP, with or without SUI, is a major health issue in older women. Over her lifetime, there is an approximately 11% chance that a woman will require surgery for one of these conditions.

What Are the Risks of Transvaginal Mesh for POP Treatment?

Pelvic organ prolapse occurs when the muscles and ligaments that hold the pelvic organs in place become weak or stretched and an organ slips out of place (prolapse) into the vagina or even past the vaginal opening. Organs that can be involved in POP include the uterus, the top of the vagina, the bladder, the bowel, and the rectum. More than one pelvic organ can prolapse at the same time. Transvaginal mesh is used to reinforce pelvic floor ligaments and vaginal tissue.

The most frequent complications associated with transvaginal mesh used in the treatment of POP are:

  • Mesh erosion through the vagina (also called exposure, extrusion, or protrusion)
  • Mesh contraction (shrinkage) resulting in vaginal shortening, vaginal tightening, and vaginal pain
  • Pelvic pain
  • Infection
  • Bleeding
  • Pain during sexual intercourse (dyspareunia)
  • Organ perforation
  • Urinary problems
  • Recurrent prolapse
  • Neuro-muscular problems
  • Vaginal scarring/shrinkage
  • Emotional problems

Many of these complications demand additional intervention, including medical or surgical treatment and hospitalization. Mesh erosion can require multiple surgeries to repair and can be debilitating. In some cases, even multiple surgeries will not resolve the complication.
