About Essure
Essure is a permanent and non-surgical birth control device. It was originally approved for use in the United States by the FDA in 2002. The product is manufactured by a company known as Conceptus, Inc. Conceptus, Inc. is owned by Bayer. Essure hit the market quickly and it wasn’t long before it became an extremely valuable product for its manufacturer. Essure was marketed as a low-maintenance, permanent pregnancy solution. Over time, it generated millions of dollars in sales for Conceptus, Inc.
How Essure Works
Essure works to prevent pregnancies on a permanent basis by basically blocking the fallopian tubes. The product is essentially made of flexible coils that are inserted into the fallopian tubes through the vagina. Over a period of three months, tissue naturally grows around the product, thereby blocking the fallopian tubes. As such, sperm can no longer reach eggs in order to fertilize them. No incisions are required to implant Essure and no real surgery takes place. The procedure can be performed in a matter of minutes at a doctor’s office.
Allegations of Essure Defects
Unfortunately, it wasn’t long before reports of alleged Essure defects began to arise in the form of women who were using the product suffering injuries. Over 5,000 negative reports regarding Essure were filed with the FDA over a period of just over 12 years. These negative Essure FDA reports included the following complaints:
- Pelvic pain
- Menstrual irregularities
- Fatigue
- Weight fluctuations
- Migration of the device
- Breakage of the device
As a result of these problems, women allegedly suffered the following Essure injuries:
- Chronic pain
- Internal bleeding
- Perforation of the uterus
- Perforation of the fallopian tubes
- Abdominal pain
- Unplanned pregnancies
Ultimately, the FDA responded to these negative reports by issuing a public statement regarding Essure. A link to that statement can be found here.
