The FDA’s Concern Over Increased Risk of Heart Failure Associated with Onglyza

The FDA’s Endocrinologic and Metabolic Drugs Advisory Committee voted in April of 2015 to include warnings on Onglyza’s labeling about the increased risk of heart failure. The warning came after an October 2013 study that was published in the New England Journal of Medicine showed the increased rate of hospitalization for heart failure.

Onglyza Linked to Pancreatitis

In addition to heart failure, Onglyza use has also been associated with the development of acute pancreatitis. AstraZeneca has recently added a warning about the risk of pancreatitis, but there was no warning when the drug was first approved by the FDA in 2009.

Onglyza may be cause Pancreatic and Thyroid Cancer

In 2013, the medical journal Diabetes published a study that showed that people taking DPP-4 inhibitors such as Onglyza showed pre-cancerous cells in their pancreas. According to the study, Onglyza and similar drugs increased the number of abnormal beta cells in the pancreas. Researchers found small tumors called adenomas that can become cancerous.
