How Are Ozempic, Wegovy, & Rybelsus Used?

Ozempic, Wegovy, and Rybelsus are medications that are part of the semaglutide class of drugs and are manufactured by the company Novo Nordisk. These are used predominantly to manage and control elevated blood sugar levels in people diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.

These drugs replicate a naturally occurring hormone: the glucagon-like peptide (GLP-1). This replication slows down the movement of food through the digestive tract, ensuring better absorption and regulation of sugars. This helps people with diabetes manage their blood sugar levels.

Other drugs used to manage blood sugar levels in those with type 2 diabetes are Mounjaro and Trulicity, manufactured by the company Eli Lily. These drugs work similarly to Ozempic but have different active ingredients that make them work.

In addition, these medications are often used to support weight loss. These drugs influence the body’s natural hormonal signals related to hunger and fullness. As the medication elevates the hormone levels, these molecules communicate with the brain, signaling satiety. This sensation of fullness can help individuals reduce their caloric intake, aiding in weight loss. However, only Wegovy is a weight-loss drug; Ozempic and Rybelsus are not approved to treat weight loss.

Health Concerns Linked to Ozempic, Wegovy, Rybelsus, Mounjaro & Trulicity

While Ozempic, Wegovy, Rybelsus, Mounjaro, and Trulicity may benefit people who struggle with diabetes or obesity, they have been linked to serious health issues. Patients have reported the following side effects when taking this medication:

  • Vision loss
  • Acute kidney injury
  • Hypoglycemia or dangerously low blood sugar
  • Liver or kidney failure
  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Excessive vomiting
  • Gastroparesis or stomach paralysis
  • Gastric/bowel obstruction
  • Ileus (intestinal blockage)
  • Pseudo intestinal obstruction
  • Pancreatitis
  • Biliary diseases

Warning Signs of Gastroparesis/Stomach Paralysis

One of the most severe complications affecting Ozempic, Wegovy, Rybelsus, Mounjaro, and Trulicity patients is gastroparesis. This condition causes stomach paralysis and negatively affects your blood sugar levels, impacting your digestive system and overall health.

Gastroparesis can cause a range of unpleasant and painful symptoms, including the following:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Weight loss
  • Loss of appetite
  • Malnutrition
  • Acid reflux
  • Abdominal bloating
  • Fluctuations in blood sugar
  • Feeling full despite eating very little

Key Allegations in the Ozempic Lawsuit

Current litigation against the manufacturer of Ozempic centers around several key allegations, which include:

  • Insufficient Warning: Legal counsel for the plaintiffs argues that Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly failed to adequately warn consumers of the significant risks associated with their drugs. Plaintiffs indicate that a lack of warning prevented them from making informed decisions to preserve their health.
  • Delayed Gastric Emptying: Individuals that experienced gastroparesis after using Ozempic allege that the drug may have caused delayed emptying of their stomach. This medical condition causes discomfort and can compromise the effects of diabetes treatment.
  • Quality of Life Impact: Significant medical effects allegedly connected to Ozempic use, such as gastroparesis, can cause chronic discomfort, dietary restrictions, and complications related to diabetes management. This side effects can significantly lower a person’s quality of life.

Requirements to File an Ozempic Lawsuit

Semaglutide lawsuits allege that Ozempic, Rybelsus, Wegovy, Mounjaro, and Trulicity manufacturers failed to include sufficient warnings regarding the risks associated with the medication. As a result, people who took this medication were unaware of these complications and developed serious injuries and health conditions as a result.

To establish the validity of your Ozempic, Rybelsus, Wegovy, Mounjaro, or Trulicity claim in court, you must meet specific criteria that establish your connection to the adverse effects of these drugs. You generally need to meet the following requirements:

  • You used Ozempic, Rybelsus, Wegovy, Mounjaro, or Trulicity for one year or longer.
  • You were later diagnosed with a health complication related to Ozempic, Rybelsus, Wegovy, Mounjaro, or Trulicity.
  • You suffered damages as a result of these complications, such as medical expenses, lost wages, or pain and suffering.

An attorney from Shapiro Legal Group, PLLC can help you gather the evidence that you need to establish these facts and prove your right to fair compensation. However, it is pertinent to note that using Ozempic or Rybelsus for weight loss, which isn’t its official use, might weaken your case. It is important to discuss your legal options with your attorney so that you are well informed about what to expect.

Potential Compensation Available in Your Case

Ozempic, Rybelsus, Wegovy, Mounjaro, and Trulicity settlements provide financial relief to those who have suffered from the negative effects of these medications. If you are pursuing a lawsuit, the severity of your injuries will play a critical role in determining the amount you might receive.

Typically, settlements in these cases encompass two types of damages: economic and non-economic. Economic damages refer to the tangible financial losses associated with the injury, while non-economic losses refer to the physical and emotional trauma that you developed.

Examples of damages in an Ozempic lawsuit may include:

  • Medical Treatment and Surgery: This covers any medical treatments or surgeries you might have undergone or will need in the future due to the adverse effects of the drug.
  • Medical Expenses: Beyond immediate treatment, other medical costs, such as follow-up appointments, medications, and rehabilitation, could be included.
  • Lost Income: If your condition forced you to miss work or reduced your ability to work, you could be compensated for lost wages, both past and future.
  • Pain and Suffering: This is a more intangible cost that recognizes the physical pain and emotional distress caused by your injuries. Examples of pain and suffering include mental anguish, chronic pain, and permanent disability.
  • Loss of Enjoyment of Life: The adverse effects might have limited your ability to enjoy daily activities or hobbies, and this loss is also considered in settlements.
  • Loss of Earning Capacity: If your injuries limit your ability to earn a living in the future, this aspect considers the potential earnings that you have lost as a result.

Your attorney from Shapiro Legal Group, PLLC will carefully assess your case and identify all potential avenues to compensation. Leveraging this information, we will estimate your settlement and advocate for your right to the highest possible award.

Cost to File an Ozempic Lawsuit

Despite being eligible for a claim, many people do not pursue legal action due to financial difficulties. Legal costs are often expensive, and few people can pay for these expenses out of pocket, especially while dealing with a serious injury. Fortunately, many law firms understand the financial hardships that their clients face and operate on a contingency fee basis.

Under a contingency fee arrangement, you will not pay any legal fees unless your attorney secures a settlement on your behalf. Then, the firm will take an agreed-upon percentage of your settlement as payment. This approach limits your out-of-pocket costs while making legal representation more accessible.

At Shapiro Legal Group, PLLC, we take Ozempic, Wegovy, Rybelsus, Mounjaro, and Trulicity claims on a contingency fee basis. Our primary focus is to seek justice on your behalf and hold the manufacturer accountable for your injuries, regardless of your financial situation. Contact us as soon as possible to learn more about our contingency fee arrangement.

Steps to Follow After an Ozempic, Wegovy, Rybelsus, Mounjaro, or Trulicity Injury

If you suspect that you have been harmed by Ozempic, Rybelsus, Wegovy, Mounjaro, or Trulicity, it is important to act quickly. Take the following steps to protect yourself and initiate your future lawsuit:

  • Seek Medical Attention As Soon As Possible: It is vital to get a medical assessment to determine the extent of your injuries. Immediate medical attention can prevent potentially dangerous complications. Taking this step also establishes a record of your condition linked to the medication.
  • Report Your Condition to the FDA: After seeking medical care, report your experience to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) MedWatch program. By submitting a report to the FDA, you contribute to the larger effort to track and understand the side effects of drugs like Ozempic. This not only helps other patients but also holds pharmaceutical companies accountable for potentially dangerous drugs.
  • Contact an Attorney to Discuss Your Case: Filing a lawsuit against an Ozempic, Wegovy, Rybelsus, Mounjaro, or Trulicity manufacturer can be a daunting task. After receiving medical care for your injury, reach out to an attorney as soon as possible. Your lawyer will help you file your claim before the deadline passes and guide you through each stage of the process.

Ozempic Lawsuit FAQs

Ozempic Lawsuit FAQs

Who is Ozempic’s Maunfacturer?

Ozempic is manufactured by Novo Nordisk, a Danish pharmaceutical company. The other drug currently involved in the Ozempic lawsuit, Mounjaro, is manufactured by Eli Lilly and Company.

What is the Ozempic Lawsuit About?

Many people have chosen to file semaglutide lawsuits against the manufacturers of drugs such as Ozempic, Mounjaro, and Wegovy. These lawsuits allege that the drug manufacturers failed to adequately warn patients about the potentially serious side effects of their medications. Many patients who chose to file a lawsuit against a semaglutide manufacturer allegedly suffered gastroparesis as a result of using a prescribed drug.

Can Ozempic Cause Gastroparesis?

Evidence suggests that prolonged or excessive use of semaglutide medications, including Ozempic, can lead to gastroparesis and other significant side effects. This is particularly true when the drug is used outside its normal purpose of diabetes management, such as for weight loss.

Can Ozempic Cause Ileus?

On September 22, 2023, a warning about the risk of Ileus was added to Ozempic’s label. “Ileus” is a medical condition where the intestines stop functioning properly. Ileus can cause an intestinal obstruction, which means that food, liquids, and gas aren’t able to pass through the digestive system. This is a serious and potentially fatal medical condition, as it can cause perforation of the intestine. Multiple incidents of ileus have been reported as side effects of semaglutide medication via the FDA dashboard.

Can Semaglutide Cause Gallbladder Problems?

Over recent years, multiple studies have indicated that the use of glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) can cause an increased risk of gallbladder disease. Ozempic is a GLP-1 analogue. Most recently, a 2022 study indicates that GLP-1 analogues are associated with a higher chance of gallbladder disease. The risk increases even more when GLP-1 analogues are used at higher doses, for longer durations, or for weight loss. A gallbladder condition known as “cholelithiasis” was reported in Ozempic clinical trials, hinting at a connection between the medication and this medical condition.

Is Ozempic Approved for Weight Loss?

At this time, no. The FDA has not approved Ozempic for the primary purpose of weight loss. However, the FDA has approved Ozempic to treat type-2 diabetes and reduce the probability of experiencing related cardiovascular issues.
